Prestasi
Once again, one of IT Telkom students earned outstanding award in national level. His name is Ahmad Agung Ahkam, an Informatics student from the class of 2007. He won achieved a gold medal in the National Mathematics and Science Olympic for University Students (ON MIPA-PT) held in Jakarta on April 28th, 2010.
Ahmad clearly showed his excitement when the Coordinator of ON MIPA-PT judges, Ahmad Muchlis, Ph.D. announced his name as the first winner. The medal conferral was directly given by the Directorate General of Higher Education (DIKTI), Fasli Jalal in the closing ceremony at DIKTI Auditorium on April 30th, 2010.
“I feel so excited. I was thinking that if I didn’t win, I will fully accept it.” Ahmad said.
He admitted that he received many supports from IT Telkom and several lecturers who constantly trained him to win the gold medal.
“My sincere gratitude goes to Mrs. Utari, my lecturer at IT Telkom. Without her helps, I wouldn’t be able to win the gold medal,” he added.
ON MIPA-PT was established by the Directorate of Academic Affairs, DIKTI in 2009. Mainly the competitions are in the area of mathematics, chemistry, and physics.
There are three selections in the ON MIPA-PT. This year, the first selection was held in each university to send its best seven students. Then, these seven best students participated in the second selection in the regional level which was held on April 6th-7th, 2010 in 12 locations across Indonesia. The best student was then participated in the National Level along with the 2009 and the 2010 winners. However, Ahmad was directly participated in the national level because he participated in the international level competition.
All participants were from various regions in Indonesia including North Sumatra, Nangroe Aceh Darussalam, South Sulawesi, Bengkulu, Lampung, Jabotabek (Jakarta, Bogor, Tangerang, and Depok), Banten, West Java, DIY Yogyakarta, Central Java, East Java, East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, Bali, Sulawesi, West Sumatera, Riau, Kepri, Jambi, Kalimantan, Maliku and Papua. There were 548 participants for mathematics our of the total participants which was 1351. Indeed, there is a great enthusiasm of participation. The number of participants is increased 46% from the number of participants in the year 2009.
In the national level (3rd selection), 20 winners will be selected from each category, thus there will be the total of 60 best students. For the 20 winners in the mathematics area, they will be trained intensively for one month to determine the best six students who will represent Indonesia in the International Mathematics Competition (IMC) XVII, July 25th-30th, 2010 in Bulgaria.
Although Ahmad will graduate next year, he still has a strong desire for participating in competitions. This leaves him with a little cloud around his mind for his future plans.
“I’m still confused on what to do when I graduate. Will I go back to my hometown Makasar, work as an engineer, or pursue my master degree?” he wondered.
Nevertheless, he hopes that if there is a scholarship allowing him to pursue his study abroad, he will definitely take the chance. He also strongly hopes that there should be other students—his juniors—who take great interests in mathematics to continue his legacy, winning the gold medal in the national level.
